While some lucky college students find work right away, for most others, the idea of hitting the job market after graduation is a little intimidating if not downright scary. With competition tough and opportunities limited, finding a job can be difficult. Yet, students and recent grads shouldn’t lose hope: finding a great job is possible even in this market, especially when you get a little help from those who know what it takes to get hired.

While career counselors at your school can be a great source of information, grads can also seek out guidance on their own through a wide range of career-focused Twitter chats. Here, we’ve listed some of the best get-togethers on Twitter for learning about everything from resume writing to working with recruiters to scoring a killer internship and just about everything in between.

I’m a Blackberry enthusiast myself, but I must admit that the range of apps available on Apple products is impressive. Now, you can even conduct your job search from your iPhone, iTouch, or iPad – never be out of touch with your network! In today’s tough job market, having constant access to job search tools can give you the advantage you need.

Using LinkedIn Connections for Job Searching

If you’re not on LinkedIn, you should be.  Surveys consistently show that using personal connections is by far the most effective way to get–not just a job, but a good career-type job.  In the olden days executives would keep business cards in a Rolodex file. Today, they are kept digitally. With LinkedIn you have not just to your own business cards, but cards of your contacts and their contacts. You can easily have potential access to over 1 million individuals.

Time comes for every college student to enter the ugly world outside. Outside is a different place than college, with expectations in the areas of “professional,” “adult,” “mature” and those unpleasant kinds of things. Not so important in college, but they soon become very.

The Career Guy has noticed that some of his young clients would benefit from enhancing their college-girl/boy email address (favorite: Oooooh_hot_chili@xxx) to something more suitable for a job search.  Also recommended is to replace the goofy voicemail message with a boring, but more acceptable one.  An employer will hang up if he hears something he doesn’t like.

Recently, the National Association of Colleges & Employers reported that 75% of employers search online to see what they cn find on prospective employees (Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc.)  70% report they have rejected candidates because of what they have found; 85% said a professional online record actually enhanced their candidates’ chances for being hired.

Are Job-Posting Sites Out of Date Already??

“What we are doing is what job boards did to newspapers,” says Ryan Caldwell, the CEO of EnticeLabs, the company behind TalentSeekr.

Seeking to find the highest-quality talent at the least cost, major companies are experimenting with a service that promotes employment vacancies through online ads. TalentSeekr is essentially an ad network for jobs. Companies fill out what jobs they are trying to fill in what locations, then TalentSeekr creats and tests multiple ads across the Web–social networks, blogs, forums, search engines–you name it. Based on the response rate and quality of the applicants that come through the ads, TalentSeekr optimizes the mix of at types. If more qualified applicants are coming i through LinkedIn than Facebook, it readjusts the mix.

There are several messages to young job seekers here. Classified newspaper ads for jobs died years ago. Now job boards are losing their appeal. LinkedIn and Twitter have gained in popularity. But it’s looking like just spending time online in your favorite websites could be valuable sources for employment opportunities.

Amazing how things change.  Adapt or die.  (Well, maybe not die, but be unemployed longer?)

Your New Job Just a ‘Tweet’ Away!

twitterMore companies are tweeting for hires.

As online job board have grown crowded amid the recession, many big companies, including Microsoft, Verizon, Raytheon and MTV, now list job openings on the Twitter microblogging site.

For employers, Twitter—where users post updates, or “tweets,” of no more than 140 characters—offers one more way to find and attract candidates, and a cheaper alternative to big online job boards. It also helps companies target social-media-savvy job hunters and convey an innovative image. For job seekers, Twitter offers the chance to interact one-on-one with companies’ recruiters and can be more convenient than job boards.

But be careful what you tweet or post in online media!  Recently a follower of Verizon’s jobs feed tweeted to the company something along the lines of, “Hey dude, you got any jobs in California?” says Mr. Zulfiqar.  That didn’t impress anyone at Verizon.
